Eclectic Works: New Releases and Then Some Marcel Dzama
Electric Works is pleased to announce, "Eclectic Works: New Releases and Then Some," a group show featuring work by Marcel Dzama, Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott, Jeremiah Maddock, Lordy Rodriguez, j.otto Seibold, Ian Heubert, Josephine Taylor, and Bob van Breda. The reception on Friday, December 5 from 6- 8 PM at 130 8th Street in San Francisco is free and open to the public. The impetus for this show started with two new releases published by Electric Works. Lordy Rodriguez' "55 States," a 12-color, hand-drawn lithograph, assembles once and for all, his re-imagined, reconstructed map of the USA. This new country, totally rearranged and redesigned adds five more states to the Union, and offers us a new look at our country, and through its schizophrenic state juxtaposition challenges our ideas of where and how we live. Our second published work, "Subterranean Visionary," is by San Francisco Art Institute graduate Josephine Taylor. Taylor's new work brings us into a world of the post-apocalypse. Wolves run wild along with feral children, but unlike many others' vision of the future, Taylor's inhabitants seem to have a direct communion with the Supernatural, mystic and ethereal. Although it's a dark world, Taylor's feel like it's one of reconnection and solidification with a world many of us have lost touch with. An ambitious eight-plate dry point, this oversized print (75"x50") features a child shaman rendered in white ink on black paper; its larger-than-life figure invites you into his cave to be surrounded by the darkness therein. Although completed a few years ago, our project with Marcel Dzama never had a gallery showing in San Francisco, and we are pleased to present this twenty lithograph set, complete with its handmade wooden cabin container along with it. New to the gallery and of special interest to those keeping up with Second Life intrigue are the paper sculptures of Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott. Their project, "No Matter," is a series of paper sculptures based on "imaginary objects". These appear in myth, literature, thought experiments and popular culture, but have never physically existed and embody the tension between the ideal and real. Items such as the Holy Grail, Trojan Horse and Yellow Submarine were built in Second Life, a popular online virtual 3D world with proprietary copyrights for builders. Each objects' digital information was captured, extracted as digital data and rebuilt in the real world (First Life) as paper sculpture. This project cleverly ties in the very best of Internet art along with a gracious sense of humor and brings us face to face with objects we never thought we would see. This work, along with new work by Jeremiah Maddock, j.otto Seibold, Ian Heubert and Bob van Breda, will be featured in the gallery along with a new miniprint by Jeremiah Maddock. Gallery Hours Monday-Friday 10 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM
