Catherine Mackey’s paintings are firmly rooted in a curiosity and engagement with the urban environment. The artist gathers the source material for her paintings on long exploratory walks. For Urbanambulations, she focused on the dense urbanity of San Francisco’s Mission District. Mackey is inspired by glimpses of compositions that are inherent in any vibrant city- the juxtaposition of bright signs with grey concrete, lumbering trucks with flashes of bicycles. The artist uses these hints as the genesis of her work. The artist photographs and sketches these scenes extensively before rendering them on panels that she treats like puzzle pieces, matching them together and combining disparate elements to form whole paintings. Urbanambulations will be on view at Hang Art from December 1 through December 30, 2008. HANG ART is located at 556 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets.
