SFAI Graduate Lecture Series with Frances McCormack Lecture: The Constant Gardener This event is Free and Open to the Public. Frances McCormack creates large, abstract oil paintings and works on paper that are informed by her research on the history of gardens. The desert garden and the walled gardens of the Near East, and their associations with the idea of paradise, is a theme she frequently explores in her work. Artist Bio In October of 2012, McCormack's piece Artifacts—a collaboration with composer Kurt Rohde and writer Sue Moon—premiered in San Francisco at the Conservatory of Music. Additional performances are scheduled in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles this year and next. A mid-career survey of McCormack’s work, From the Ground Up: Painting, Process, and the Garden, was exhibited at the Palo Alto Art Center in 2007. Her curatorial projects include Silence, Exile, and Cunning—a 2010 exhibition for the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Among other awards, McCormack was the recipient of the first SFAI Faculty Residency at the American Academy in Rome. She is represented by the Elins Eagles-Smith Gallery, San Francisco, and the R. B. Stevenson Gallery, La Jolla, California. McCormack is Associate Professor and Painting Department Chair at SFAI. www.francesmccormack.com San Francisco Art Institute 800 Chestnut Street San Francisco, CA 94133
