Fellowship Talks: Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo and Sanaz Mazinani

 Tuesday, April 16, 7-9pm
Kala Gallery, 2990 San Pablo Av, Berkeley, CA 94702 Kala Art Institute is excited to present artist talks by 2012-2013 Kala Fellowship artists Sanaz Mazinani and Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo. Kala’s Fellowship Program includes an annual series of artists talks presented by current Fellows during their studio residencies. The talk is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Sanaz Mazinani is an artist, curator, and educator based in San Francisco. Mazinani uses conceptual and documentary strategies in her multi-media work to examine the context in which meaning is negotiated, and to scrutinize the perspectival frames through which conflict is made manifest. Mazinani received her MFA from Stanford University. In 2012, she was Guest Curator at Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, where she curated Edward Weston: On Light, Line and Form. She was shortlisted for the 2013 Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize, and is the recipient of the San Francisco Arts Commission's “Art on Market Street” commission for 2013/2014.

Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo is expanding his ongoing investigation into issues of collective memory, historical trauma and cultural identity. Through the production of mixed media drawings, monoprint works on paper, and a series of stop animation video shorts, Ramirez plans to utilize his critical lens and further explore the capability of narrative in his work. Castillo received his MFA from Concordia University and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. He was recipient of the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Visual Arts in Canada in 2011, and is the winner of various production grants from The Canada Council for the Arts, Les Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec, as well as The Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He lives and works in Montreal.
