Charismatic Fauna Mary Curtis Ratcliff "Gentle Giant" (2013) paper, ink, acrilic, collage, drawing, and digital inkjet print, 32"x24"; Photo by Tony Molatore at Berkeley Giclée.
Mercury 20 Gallery presents Mary Curtis Ratcliff's new show, Charismatic Fauna. The artist shows us the pattern of her lifelong connection to animals in her work, weaving new works with special selections of earlier work, such as her bronze Trout (1983), and the painting, drawing and collage piece Totem (2001). Ratcliff has long varied her methods and media, and this show reflects that, but the artist says that whether the work is 2-D or 3-D, collage, sculpture, or installation, and whether it might include bronze, wood, wire, stone, encaustic etc., the spirits of the animals are present. Creatures of the air, land, and sea may habitate natural, abstract, or surreal creations. www.marycurtisratcliff.com Mary Curtis Ratcliff studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been featured in over twenty solo exhibitions and close to 100 group shows. It is represented in the collections of the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco and the Oakland Museum of California.
