Fresh Works, the annual spring open exhibit coordinated by the Harrington Gallery at the Firehouse Arts Center, opens Wednesday, April 24. Adjudicated by the respected art curator Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell of Stanford University, the exhibit this year features works in a variety of media from 73 different artists, both established names and newly emerging talents. The exhibit will be on display through Saturday, May 25. The free opening reception which includes the awards ceremony is Saturday, April 27, from 1-3 p.m. Included in the festivities is presentation of a special $500 award endowed by Pleasanton residents and art patrons Gary and Nancy Harrington. The public is welcome to enjoy refreshments and meet with the artists who will be in attendance.
The title "Fresh Works" was the result of Harrington Gallery Director Julie Finegan's desire "to have artists submit work that was fresh and new, rather than something that has made the circuit of exhibits in the local art scene. The theme also suggests something new, daring, different, hot-off-the-press, paint still drying, figuratively of course!" says Finegan. She went on to explain that the impetus for establishing the now annual exhibit was to offer local artists the experience of a professionally juried exhibit, as well as the opportunity to come together with artists, both established and emerging, living outside the Tri-Valley.
The exhibit juror this year is Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, the Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs for the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. She described her task of adjudicating the over 350 submitted works as "a daunting but rewarding task." She also expressed her gratitude for being invited to serve this year, and said that "Pleasanton clearly fosters...enthusiasm for art, and (that) the area hosts a concentration of accomplished and visionary artists."
