Linved Stream Marsha McDonald, Linved Stream #5, 2012, Acrylic on panel, 8 x 10 inches
Marsha McDonald: Linved Stream April 6 – April 30, 2013 Chandler Fine Art 170 Minna Street, San Francisco www.chandlersf.com Chandler Fine Art presents Marsha McDonald’s "Linved Stream," a solo exhibition of painting and bronze sculpture inspired by her time in rural Denmark. Marsha McDonald is joined by poet Tinker Greene in conversation on Saturday, April 6, at 5:30pm, followed by an artist reception from 6:30 to 7:30pm. The exhibition runs through April 30, 2013. Marsha McDonald’s recent body of work was created during her residency on a farm outside the city of Odense, Denmark. There, she spent her time walking the fields where, among the birch, juniper, and alder trees, runs the Linved Stream. Intentionally restored to its prehistoric course in recent decades, the stream is the focus of the paintings, and looking into its dark water became a sort of daily practice—first as an entry into the history of the place, then as its own continuum. Accompanying the paintings are 39 small bronze "stones”. Each filled with water, they were cast from wax impressions of stones she collected while exploring the fields and are intended to be seen as a group, a system, and an abacus that can be used to "calculate" our relationship to the past. Marsha McDonald has participated in artist residencies in Ireland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, and Norway. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in the US and internationally, including the US Department of State in Sri Lanka. In 2012, she was award a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and next year, her work will be exhibited as part of the Water Symposium in Denmark. She currently lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
