Emerging Artist Series Alphabet Irony
Atelier is pleased to present the fourth installment of its Emerging Artist Series and first solo exhibition featuring the work of Sophia Ahmed Sattar. The exhibition will run from May 1 through June 30, 2013. A reception with the artist will be held on May 2, 2013 from 5pm – 8pm. Artist Sophia Ahmed Sattar is on a mission to change negative stereotypes of the Muslim world with her series, Fragrant Script: Exhibition of Contemporary Muslim American Art. Inspired by both the colorful truck art that is a common sight in Pakistan and the ancient Islamic art form of calligraphy, Sophia’s work is at the conflux of the traditional and the contemporary. In her large-scale paintings she begins with decorative lettering which she then overlays with vibrant colors through an organic process of addition until she feels the work is complete. Employing titles inspired by Urdu poetry, a poetic tradition that has strong roots in Pakistani culture, Sophia further strengthens the link between past and present. By conceptualizing the calligraphy in order to add tension and balance, she has crafted a body of work that is a harmonious hybrid of Eastern and Western artistic practice. By doing this she hopes that her work is able to visually and culturally bridge the gap between the East and the West. Raised in Pakistan, Sophia first received a BFA in Fine Art from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture before deciding to pursue both Abstract Painting and Printmaking at the Academy of Art University where she received her MFA in December of 2012. This past March her work was requested to be the cover art for Yale professor Zareena Grewal’s upcoming book, “Muslims in Foreign Countries.” Sophia also serves an ambassador at the International Museum for Women for the Muslimah: Art and Voices.
