SFAI’s MFA Exhibition “Currency”
The Old Mint, 88 5th St. San Francisco, CA 94103
May 16th-19th, 2013
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday May 17th 7-9 p.m.
Ingrid V. Wells is please to announce an exhibition of new watercolor and oil paintings marking her graduation from San Francisco Art Institute.
Her gestural approach to painting contemplates the notion of guilty pleasure and as it enters into the discourse of painting. The new series Honey Boo Boo’s Amurrican Starquest draws on source material from a variety of cultural references including reality television, the world of Hello Kitty, child beauty pageants, Brecht’s Three Penny Opera, and daily observations including small dogs dressed up by their owners. By emphasizing the artificial display of happiness with over-the-top dripping spectacle of paint and well-practiced facial expressions, the paintings critique the type of images that American viewers have become so attached. This inquiry into the power dynamics of grotesque performer and entertained audience questions the ethics of fascination.
Ingrid V. Wells lives and works in San Francisco, CA. She has recently exhibited her works in New York, Arizona, and Stanford University in addition to being featured on Hyperallergic LABS. She earned her BFA from Arizona State University in 2010 and anticipates graduating with her MFA from SFAI this May.
