Inhabit Margaret Fitzgerald: Inhabit, 2012, oil on canvas, 54 x 48 inches
Margaret Fitzgerald: "Inhabit" May 1 – May 30, 2013 Reception Saturday, May 4, 5–7pm Chandler Fine Art 170 Minna Street, San Francisco www.chandlersf.com Chandler Fine Art presents Inhabit, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Margaret Fitzgerald, on view May 1 through May 30, 2013, with an artist reception on Saturday, May 4, 5–7pm. For her fifth solo exhibition at Chandler Fine Art, Albuquerque-based painter Margaret Fitzgerald presents new works in oil on canvas investigating ideas of construction and deconstruction through the use of multiple layers of paint and content, striking a juxtaposition between deliberate and spontaneous compositional elements. The title, Inhabit, refers both to a specific painting and to her process in general. “With the push and pull of the paint I hope to find abstracted forms that suggest something familiar. With each painting I want to dig deeper, to move beyond the limitations of words and evoke an emotional response. I want to catch a glimpse of the intangible human experience.” Finding inspiration in the architecture, art, and urban landscapes encountered during her time in Europe and South America, as well as drawing on recurring themes relating to the figure and the serendipity of the painting process, Fitzgerald’s works explore her ongoing interest in the precarious relationship between the natural and the constructed. Her large-scale compositions—deceptive in their initial simplicity—reveal a complexity of layers and textures, built up and scraped away. Her bold colors and elusive moments of text draw the viewer in with a challenge to decipher its meaning. An abstract painter and sculptor, Fitzgerald’s work focuses on the current environmental crisis and the delicate balance between the natural world and built civilization. Drawing constantly as a child, Fitzgerald received a Bachelor’s in Fine Art from the University of New Mexico and studied Fine Art and Art History at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In addition to her education in the states, Fitzgerald studied at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She has exhibited at several galleries across the U.S. such as the Laguna Gallery of Contemporary Art in Laguna Beach, Heidi Cho Gallery in New York, and LewAllen Contemporary in Albuquerque, as well as the American Embassy in Vatican City, Italy. In 2014, she will present solo exhibitions at SPACE in London and at the Ross Art Museum at Ohio Wesleyan University. Fitzgerald lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
