"Recent Paintings" continues Susan Parker’s fascination with a sculptural sensibility. Working with acrylic paint on canvas and on panel, she creates paintings, which have a certain amount of low-relief “structure”. She builds and cultivates visual fields inhabited by shapes, patterns and linear elements.
Parker says these “embody ideas that interest me: the land, water, the effects of light and shadow in response to the changing angle of light, organic form, and common directional patterns found in nature. My working process involves intuitive and formal decision, revision, and applying innumerable layers of translucent color to achieve a degree of luminosity. I try to make paintings that have a strong overall physical presence and convey a sense of intimacy and discovery upon closer viewing.”
Susan Parker has been represented by Don Soker Contemporary Art for nearly 20 years and this is her third solo exhibition with the gallery. Her works have been exhibited extensively and are in numerous public and private collections. She lives and works in San Francisco.
The exhibition dates are June 1-July 20.
