Royal NoneSuch Gallery is pleased to present: Friends, Family, Neighbors A solo show by David Gregory Wallace Exhibition Dates: May 31st-June 30th, 2013 Opening Event: Friday May 31st, 8-10pm Screening: TBA Gallery Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 1-4pm An automated shadow puppet machine installed in the front window of the gallery, for which the exhibition is named, utilizes 160 color slide portraits taken of over 50 people from the artist’s daily life. Portraits of loved ones, roommates, co-workers and neighbors are projected on the window as a flock of shadow birds and the silhouette of a Predator drone move across their faces. For the video loop 'This is where we live', Wallace has constructed a classic A-frame house out of drone footage found on the internet. Most of the videos are of successful targeted strikes on supposed insurgents or terrorists--attacks which often also kill civilians. In contrast to the portraits of the artist’s friends, family and neighbors in the window installation, the people captured in the drone footage lack recognizable characteristics and remain anonymous. A short video, 'Predator', depicts a boy flying a model drone through private and public spaces around the East Bay. Predator reflects on our shared complicity in the use of drones as well as our simultaneous vulnerability in a world where they have become ubiquitous. Friends, Family, Neighbors opens on Friday, May 31, with a reception from 8-10pm and remains on view through June 30, 2013. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4pm. There will be literature and other information on drone-related issues selected by the artist for visitors to peruse alongside this exhibition. About the Gallery: Royal NoneSuch Gallery is an artist-run alternative art and event space located in the Temescal district of Oakland, California. We are dedicated to creating community around art-based experiences that are thought provoking and conceptually rigorous, while also being accessible and fun. Through a framework of monthly exhibitions and related programs, we strive to maintain a dynamic schedule in which the gallery is continuously reinvented to reflect the spirit and process of an artist, specific program series, or collaboration. The Royal NoneSuch Gallery is not motivated by commercial interests, but instead by working with other artists and creators to facilitate experimentation and social engagement through monthly exhibitions and events. We encourage artists to translate their studio practice, not only into a month long installation, but into a social context that allows the public to actively connect with the central concepts and ideas of the exhibition through opportunities for participation. We take active responsibility for being part of an emerging art scene in Oakland by encouraging an atmosphere of creative risk taking from artists and participation from the community, aiming always for public experiences that are inclusive, innovative, and educational. Visitors to Royal NoneSuch can expect to see, hear, learn, experiment, and participate.
