Open Space
Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to present OPEN SPACE, a solo exhibition of work by Zachary Royer Scholz, curated by Ben Cooper, Collections Manager, di Rosa Preserve: Art & Nature. OPEN SPACE will be on view December 5, 2008 – January 31, 2009. The opening reception will be held Friday, December 5 from 6 – 9 PM in conjunction with Oakland’s Art Murmur. Open Space is a series of new works by Zachary Royer Scholz created in response to the architectural setting of the Chandra Cerrito Contemporary Gallery. This installation will include freestanding sculpture, wall mounted cut foam works, and a painting created directly on the gallery wall. Formally, Scholz's work references Minimalist sculpture in it's pared down, geometric abstraction. However, in his use of materials, Scholz departs dramatically from the sleek surfaces associated with 60's Minimalism, creating work from a range of cast-off objects, whose worn imperfection attests to their former uses. He describes his working process as a collaboration with these objects and the ideas and associations they carry. Scholz alters and manipulates his materials as little as possible, and his works reveal themselves slowly. Prolonged, careful viewing rewards the viewer with the works' unexpected aesthetic richness. In this way Scholz's work disrupts our habitual attitudes to the overlooked objects which surround us everyday. Scholz lives and works in Berkeley, CA. He received his MFA from California College of the Arts in 2006 and was a finalist for the 2008 SFMOMA SECA award. Gallery hours: Fridays 4-7 PM (First Fridays until 9 PM) Saturdays 12 - 3 PM By appointment - cheri@chandracerrito.com
