A jazzy palette of 13 contemporary ceramic sculptors offer an homage to the studio sojourn. This exhibition addresses the theme of the artist’s deeply personal journey when sequestered in the studio. Deep in the Shed derives its name from “woodshedding,” a jazz term that describes the act of secluding oneself in the studio to work out ideas and develop techniques that are to become the foundation of one’s unique vision. It is a time of experimentation and a time of incubation - as artist Macha Suzuki says, “In my studio I don’t want to hear others’ voices. This makes my work mine.” What takes place in the studio is often a mystery; this exhibition offers a glimpse into the studio sojourn.
