The Smoking Nun Gallery OPENING: FRIDAY JULY 19, 2013. TIME: 7-10PM EXHIBITION RUN: JULY 19 – AUGUST 19. 2013 (by appointment only) 1116 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94103 THE FARMING OF SCARS AND STAINS solo exhibition by Maja Ruznic Alter Space and Terroir are pleased to present a solo exhibition from San Francisco based artist, Maja Ruznic, at the Smoking Nun Gallery. Unmasking the psychology behind familiar and often frightening experiences is a central force of Maja Ruznic’s work. In The Farming of Scars and Stains, Ruznic displays a series of small scale works in watercolor and ink on paper. Through their personal and intimate scale, combined with Ruznic’s dedication to material, and smart use of white space to frame the interior landscape of her character’s dilemmas, she creates a powerfully honest and raw aura of vulnerability. Ruznic is drawn to the unpredictable nature of ink and watercolor, allowing the medium to drive her subject matter. She lets her paintings tell her how to paint them. Ruznic’s process is a play in intuitive response, with material qualities informing an image that celebrates the intimacy possible when one bears their traumas, whether large or small. Maja Ruznic (born 1983, Bosnia & Hercegovina) studied Psychology and Art at UC Berkeley and received her MFA from the California College of the Arts. Ruznic came to the United States as a refugee in 1992 and currently lives and works in San Francisco. Her painting “The Mother of All Evil” was featured on the cover of New American Paintings in 2011. She is represented by Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco and will exhibit new work at Galerie Vidal St Phelle in Paris this October. The Smoking Nun Gallery 1116 Folsom St San Francisco, CA 94103
