Southern Exposure is pleased to announce a new public project commissioned through its SoEx Off-Site Graue Award, featuring work from internationally recognized artist Liz Magic Laser. Living Newspaper: Extra Extra is her first West Coast performance project. Over the course of five days, Laser and her collaborators, actors Audrey Crabtree and Michael Wiener, will stage public performances inspired by daily newspaper photographs and headlines. In addition to morning and evening street performances, the public is invited to participate in workshops led by Laser, Crabtree and Wiener, in which participants will discuss and recreate headline stories and images at Southern Exposure, August 7-11, 2013, 1-3 pm. Laser’s The Living Newspaper: Extra Extra is part of an ongoing project to performatively address the relationship between the news media and the public. By re-enacting news stories, she invites the audience to evaluate their consumption of current events. August 7 - 11, 2013 Daily Performances: 9 – 11 am and 5 – 7 pm Daily Workshop: 1 - 3 pm Off-Site Kiosk Performance Schedule: Wednesday, August 7 – Sunday, August 11, 2013 9 – 11 am and 5 – 7 pm Location: Newspaper kiosk at Market Street @ Montgomery and Post Streets Free Public Workshop Schedule: Wednesday, August 7 - Sunday, August 11, 2013 1 – 3 pm Location: Southern Exposure, 3030 20th Street, San Francisco Invoking the history of street theater combined with tableaux vivants, installation, publication, and participatory actions, Living Newspaper: Extra Extra will take place as a series of dynamic performances around three newspaper kiosks in the downtown area of San Francisco in the morning and evening rush hours, maximizing the potential for unexpected encounters in these highly trafficked areas. Beyond witnessing these performances, Southern Exposure invites the public to join in Laser’s project by attending mid-day workshops held by Laser, Crabtree, and Wiener, in which participants will dissect and perform news stories daily at Southern Exposure, 1 – 3 pm. Living Newspaper: Extra Extra is part of Laser’s ongoing project to performatively address current news events and the relationship between the public and mass media. In her investigations, she highlights the scripted elements of both televised and printed news, shattering any pretense of an objective lens. By re-performing news performances, she challenges the audience to reevaluate their consumption of daily events, positioning viewers as willing participants in a circus-like arena. ABOUT THE GRAUE AWARD In 2009, The Graue Family Foundation invested in Southern Exposure's growing public art initiative, SoEx Off-Site, through the creation of The Graue Award. The award offers an opportunity for local, national, and international artists to propose ideas leading to the development and presentation of an ambitious public art project in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2011, the Graue Award funded Manifest Destiny!, a SoEx Off-Site public project by Jenny Chapman and Mark A Reigelman II, on view in downtown San Francisco from November 2011 through October 2012.
