The Illuminated Library From the Akron Stacks series by Nina Katchadourian
Artists and books have a long-standing relationship, from the earliest “illuminations” — exquisite drawings that decorated the margins of early European texts — through books made by artists and works that show the collaboration between authors and visual artists, especially compelling in illustrated books for children. This wide-ranging exhibit presents both contemporary and historic explorations of the book form and the relationship of text and image, including rare illustrated manuscripts borrowed from the Sutro Library and the Special Collections of SF State’s J. Paul Leonard Library. Contemporary artists featured in the exhibition include: Kim Anno, Tauba Auerbach, Enrique Chagoya, Travis Collinson, Brian Dettmer, Jason Jägel, Jess, Nina Katchadourian, Judith Lowry, Catherine Opie, Matthew Picton and Clare Rojas. Diverse styles, unique original art for children’s books, illuminated musical scores, pop-up books and artists’ books are among the many highlights of this fascinating study. A related exhibit at SF State’s J. Paul Leonard Library highlights rare and special books in its collection. Curated by Sharon Bliss with the Fine Arts Gallery.
