Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present new and recent works by Chason Matthams. Matthams takes photographs with his digital camera. He also finds images on the internet. He chooses specific images and paints them sometimes hyper-realistically, sometimes abstractly, sometimes surreal. Editing the images, Matthams navigates a life mediated--almost constructed--by digital images. In his words: 'They have so much to do with process. Not just in terms of making something but also in how someone goes about their day to day life. The process of choice: framing and having a plan; how in control someone can be of it and how it can bend or change courses depending on chance and accident.' Matthams includes three paintings of film and video cameras. He suggests an interest in cinema and the possibility of different narratives--both linear and non-linear--produced by the paintings. Again in his words: 'The important issue here is whether or not the story I create functions--or facilitates a way of functioning--that is of benefit to me (not to mention the reader or viewer of the paintings). Will the story I tell myself, and you, lead me to stay available to the potential of new possibilities, a greater perception? Or will I unknowingly just be confirming an organizing principle that has functioned for me in the past? Does the...contextualizing of my work lead the audience and me somewhere? Or do I kid myself that I can possibly make sense of it while in the experience?' Chason Matthams received both his BFA and MFA from New York University where he also teaches painting and drawing. Chason lives and works in New York and has shown his artwork there and in San Francisco and Los Angeles. For more information please contact the gallery: tyler@tylerwoodgallery.com
