Fluid, an exhibition in celebration of San Francisco's America's Cup, features 8 prominent American realist painters' approach to figurative and concrete conceptions of water. Fluid includes renowned painters Scott Prior, Scott Fraser, Ben Aronson, John Nava, Nancy Switzer, Karen Gunderson, Francesca Sundsten, and Skip Steinworth.
Popular New England artist, Scott Prior, whose work is public collections such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, depicts the rugged and stoic waterfront of the Northeast. He captures the region's soft light falling on iconic waterfront homes. Prior, son-in-law of Kurt Vonnegut, recalls American history through his paintings.
John Nava expresses the brighter California light reflecting off the sand and waves of the Pacific Ocean. The subjects in his work enjoy summer beaches as they reflect on nature's vastness. Internationally recognized as a draftsman and painter, Nava also invented a tapestry technique used by Chuck Close.
Scott Fraser updates the Old Master style with his witty intellect and exceptional technique, painting objects of the sea including sand dollars, shells and even narwal toys. His work is in many public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Nancy Switzer uses heavy impasto strokes and repetitive forms to address the show's water-theme. She has appeared in many individual and group shows including side-by-side with Wayne Thiebaud. In her West Coast premier, New York painter Karen Gunderson expresses a quiet yet eerie approach to nature, creating waves in black with silver touches. Francesca Sundsten experiments with figures that are at one with water. Skip Steinworth's meticulous graphite drawings reflect, almost photographically, the rocky and rugged north shore of Minnesota's Lake Superior.
