Opening reception: Opening Sat. Jan. 10th 7-10pm Mat O'Brien's work is full of alternative culture references, snippets, and portraits. In his own words he is "drawn towards and curious about Alternative culture, curious about it's coined phrase, it's involvement with the early nineties 'grunge movement, and its encompassing nostalgic aesthetics." Mat asks questions in his work such as "does it (alternative culture) rebel against any normal common thread? is there any normal culture? is there no such thing as normal? " Also he comes at the question as someone older, but with a distinctly alternative background. He was professional skateboarder and used to be enmeshed in the culture he is still mining. Now he is an avid noticer, patiently speculative, with Process Cyan blue at his side.
