Unconstructed Daniel Nevers at MG Gallery
Gallery Hours: Saturdays and Mondays, 10am-2pm Where: MG Gallery, 5532 Shattuck Avenue, Oakland, CA 94609 Website: www.marboegreengallery.com, www.danielnevers.com This January MG Gallery proudly presents the work of Daniel Nevers. After receiving his MFA from Mills College in 2008, Daniel has worked on many projects including an installation for Southern Exposure during a three week residency. He comes to MG now to create an installation whose concept can best be described by his artist statement: "Do-it-yourself is the new self-help. Using everyday objects from the home-improvement megastore, my work examines the ways we present ourselves and the ways we are perceived. If our personalities are nothing but a series of defenses, how do we build and renovate those barriers over time? When do the walls we hide behind end up revealing more about us than they protect? I am interested in the moment, simultaneously thrilling and dangerous, when constructions begin to teeter, sag, bend and sway. Whether materials are strapped, stacked or bungeed together, I am searching for the place where control and chaos collide. Interiors are important. Heavily informed by pop psychology and O, The Oprah Magazine, I am curious what it means to strive to be more authentic and how our true selves seem always just out of reach. Renovation never ends." MG Gallery, located in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, is an installation space that supports a system of interactive projects. As directors, Adam Green and Kari Marboe are interested in projects that engage their two main communities, artists and neighbors, in art making practices. They are dedicated to helping artists create fine art projects that go outside the box and encourage participation, creation and integration. The gallery has so far fueled projects such as Sentence Drawing Sentence, curated by George Pfau and Alex Pratt, and The Bingo Kings, curated by Adam Green, Scott Green and Kari Marboe.
