Park Life presents Drawing Club. A group show of paintings and drawings.
The year was 2004, San Francisco, California. Drawing club was not an art collective. It was friends getting together and drawing with the purpose of fun and exploration and inspiration. In the Mission District on Sunday mornings, Bryson Gill, Chi Birmingham, Casey Watson, Isaac Lin, Jay Nelson, Kyle Mock, Peter Scherrer and Rachel Kaye would gather in a sun drenched living room. They all met while studying at the California College of the Arts. They were friends hanging out in a creative environment outside of school. They gathered for a day of doodling and collaborating on each others drawings. Pencils, pens, paper, brushes and other various drawing materials were sprawled out on the floor. No one was the sole author of a specific work, nothing was precious, and no work was for sale. Drawing would last all day with bouts of conversation, jokes and often focused silence. People brought books, movies and music to share as inspiration. This was a budding time for these young artists. In the evening, often there would be a potluck style feast to recoup, reflect and unwind from the day. Much like the drawings that were made, the dinner would parallel the ideas of collaborating and sharing. Sometimes amounting to over 30 works during the session, drawings would be laid out on the floor and wall. Narratives, connections, and comments would be made while pointing at one piece or another.
The Drawing Club dissolved after graduation in 2005. Since then, some members have moved away but all are focused on their own individual work. Each of them continues to be active artists. Most notably many of the group members now exhibit at Triple Base Gallery. They keep in touch with one another, but Drawing Club is the past. The work created during Drawing Club was never intended to be shown outside of the group and most except for a few rare relics, has washed away into the ether. The dialogs that began with this club continue to be carried by each of its members in work and life. This show "Drawing Club" is based on a time and place but will not be showing the work made during the Drawing Club. The work displayed will hopefully show where these paths once crossed and where they are now.
