“KISARAGI” is an exhibition of new paintings by artists Chiami Sekine and Ryoko Tajiri. In Japanese, “KISARAGI” is the traditional name for the month of February. Its varied meanings are “the season for piling kimono”, “the season which becomes cheerful”, and “ the season in which plants begin to grow”. Chiami Sekine’s works have a frenzied elegance in their handling. Mixed-media layering of collage, acrylic and oil pastel reveal a world of light, flora, and delicate songbirds. Ryoko Tajiri's “Orizuru” series, paintings of origami cranes, are executed with a bold, almost architectural angularity, using a colorful palette of built up translucent glazes expressing the interplay of refracted light. Executed with bold decisiveness yet filled with inviting color and delicate beauty, Sekine and Tajiri’s artwork bring warmth to this cold month. Show runs February 1st –February 28th, 2009. Hours: 10am-Midnight
