Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition featuring new work by Mitch Jones and Tracy Krumm, with an opening reception held on Wednesday, February 25 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Although working in different mediums, both artists explore the histories of craft and decorative arts and place them in a contemporary context. "These sculptures are reminiscent of things that might be used to catch, strain, sift, or filter. The work becomes a corporal, yet abstract, metaphor for what I emotionally and psychically allow in and what I block out." - Tracy Krumm Tracy Krumm’s sculpture is grounded in the histories of sculpture and women’s work. It involves the investigation and juxtaposition of historically gender-specific techniques, such as crochet and blacksmithing, to question and comment on identity, duality, relationships, and beauty. The resulting sculptures are an exploration of these traditional processes, integrated with found industrial and domestic objects and her longstanding engagement with nature and ecological practice. Krumm received a BFA in Textiles from the California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College. “I have always felt that for me, painting is a way of actively scratching the surface to get at what is deeper.” - Mitch Jones Mitch Jones incorporates antique books, documents, and visual encyclopedias into his paintings, often layering bands of paint and printed materials. He challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface and read his works as one would read a document. Painting for Jones is a “personal excavation”, visual proof of his journey through life. Jones is a self-taught painter.
