Kala’s Fellowship program includes a series of artists’ talks by our current Fellows. Over the next several months, each of the eight artists will give a presentation of their work and discuss their current residency projects at Kala. On Tuesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm. Kala will host the first in our series of gallery talks with presentations by current Fellowship Artists Pawel Kruk and Lindsey White.
This event is free and open to the public, so invite a friend. Refreshments will be served. At the end of the Fellowship Talk, we will pick the winner for the print by Kala Art Institute Artist-in-Residence, Nora Pauwels. Thank you very much for the generous donations to support Kala's programs.
Pawel Kruk recently arrived in the Bay Area from Warsaw, Poland. Kruk’s work frequently involves combinations of performance and video in which he takes on the guise of cultural icons such as legendary athlete Michael Jordan. A recent video features the artist playing an impressive game of basketball and also posing as Jordan in an interview. The staged television interview presents Kruk with a shaved head delivering lines from Jordan’s biography while carefully mimicking the athlete’s mannerisms. These media fabrications call into question issues of authenticity and our culture’s obsession with sports and stardom. Kruk’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions throughout Poland and was recently included in The American Effect at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has had residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts, International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York and he has been an ArtsLink Fellow. Kruk received his degree from The Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland.
Lindsey White is an interdisciplinary artist whose works combine elements of both humor and wonderment while examining everyday mishaps. White’s quirky video explorations investigate fictitious low-tech cause and effect scenarios, optical illusions and figments of the imagination as they might occur in random moments of daily life. She is a recent graduate of California College of the Arts. Lindsey’s work has been seen in the Bay Area at Jack Hanley Gallery, Southern Exposure and Eleanor Harwood Gallery. Her work was also recently included in the Deadpan Exchange II festival in Berlin and is currently on view in Front and Center at The Headlands.
