Maya Kabat, C and D, 2007; oil on canvas; 48 in. x 48 in.

The SFMOMA Artists Gallery will feature the work of Bay Area artists Maya Kabat, Ari Salomon, and Mari Andrews in a show that runs from Feb. 4 – Mar. 13, 2009. Gallery hours are Tues. – Sat. from 11:30 to 5:30. The gallery hosts an opening reception on Thurs., Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. In a new series of paintings, Maya Kabat uses a range of scraping tools to create surface with stripes, gouges and flat slabs of paint. Her work mirrors the horizontal and vertical structures around her that turn slightly off-kilter with time and wear. Entire layers are exposed and then covered. She says, “I see the process of painting as a form of excavation,” but the results of her unearthing are anything but static. These works are full of light and movement. Ari Salomon shows a series of panoramic color photography exploring the industrial vernacular architecture of Tokyo and Fukuoka, Japan taken during 2007 and 2008. These two fast-paced and ever-changing cities are viewed with the very generous wide aspect ratio and rendered in color. The images are composed of individual photographs shot in sequence and stitched on a computer yielding in some pictures a 360-degree view. Salomon feels the results, “capture the sense that there are simply too many things in the world — we can't take them all in.” Mari Andrews makes engaging sculpture that is best viewed at close range. Whether she is drawing with wire or creating a support for sheaths of paper, each piece reveals an underlying structure. Other works are dressed up in tree moss, silicone or adorned with stones. These are sensuous forms that satisfy the desire to see an armature clothed. Andrews describes her work as, “three-dimensional drawings informed by structures of all kinds - cellular to mineral and plant-based to skeletal.” She favors common or natural materials like wire, tissue-thin paper and seedpod which she transforms into wall sculptures and composed groupings. Also on view through March 13 in the Loft Gallery is a show organized by Renée de Cossio entitled New World Order: Ecology that features work by Bert Bergen, Charlie Callahan, Tom Hawkins, Carol Newborg, and Jenna North.
