Death of a Dream: The Magnificent Failures of our Forefathers
Opening Reception: Saturday May 16th 7 – 10pm Free and open to the public Alena Rudoplh’s work reflects that certain intimacy between landscape and solitude. The quietness of being alone within an encapsulated glimpse of time allows for the breathing in of history as it coincides quietly with the present. Her solo show at Rowan Morrison Gallery features new paintings depicting the gradual demise of structures discarded during the rough patches that followed the failures of homesteading. In her paintings are barns, feed shacks, houses, fencing and graves in various states of arrested decay. As supports she employs cross sections of splendid hard wood, in which the wood-grain acts as background. Rudolph was born in Los Angeles in 1974. The timing of her initial arrival to San Francisco coincided with the nationally recognized “Mission School” movement of the late nineties; gaining her a self-taught style entrance into Bay Area exhibits from 1996 through the present. Launching opportunities continentally and internationally, as well as with several notable publications. Her exhibition history includes prominent contemporary spaces such as New Image Art in Los Angeles, Front Room (New York), The Luggage Store, 31 Rausch (San Francisco), and Galleri Loyal in Sweden. She was nominated for the 2001 SFMOMA In/Site Award, and included in Bay Area Now 3 (2002) at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. Rudolph continues to work from her studio in Oakland, CA.
