Walking the Line The cover of Michael Muhammad Knight's Blue-Eyed Devil: A Road Odysee Through Islamic America
Location: Eastwing, Building 944 Ticket Info: FREE Admission Sometimes the personal and political are impossible to untangle. Michael Muhammad Knight (AIR '09) tackles his dual identity as an American born into an Irish Catholic family who converted to Islam in his adulthood by immersing himself into Islamic subcultures. He grapples with questions of identity in unexpected ways, incorporating his dark sense of humor and background in journalism into works of fiction and non-fiction. Join us for a poignant opportunity to hear Knight read and discuss works in progress and ideas around hybrid identity, globalization and Islam in America with Maryam Afaq and Wajahat Ali. Ali is a Pakistani Muslim American playwright, essayist, humorist and attorney. He wrote The Domestic Crusaders, the first major play to depict Muslim Americans living in post 9/11 America. He is the Associate Editor of Altmuslim.com and a regular contributor to The Guardian. Afaq is a Bay Area poet whose work ruminates on the complexities of her identity as a Muslim-American woman. She holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley. We ask that you kindly RSVP to public programs by emailing info@headlands.org.
