Kala Fellowship Talk
Kala’s Fellowship program includes a series of artists’ talks by our current Fellows. Over the next several months, each of our Fellowship artists will give a presentation of their work and discuss their current residency projects at Kala. On Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 pm. Kala will host the second in our series of gallery talks with presentations by current Fellowship artists Samantha Lautman and Chris Turbuck. Samantha Lautman works in drawing and printmaking yet employs radically non-traditional print surfaces into her studio practice. Samantha imaginatively employs pennies and junk mail promotional credit cards as actual printing plates. These lowly materials lend a trace of their own significance to the artist’s carefully hand-rendered imagery. Meshing the commercial with the hand crafted, the promotional credit card prints serve as ironic metaphors for the desirable yet unattainable “good life” in our wealthy country. Samantha’s work has recently been presented in the Bay Area at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, di Rosa Preserve, Mission 17, Intersection for the Arts, and SFMOMA Artist Gallery. Chris Turbuck comes to Kala from Canada by way of Bozeman where he was recently teaching printmaking and drawing at Montana State University. Turbuck creates visual autobiographies that are stylistically aligned with the format of a comic book. His works present fragmented tableau-like moments that capture the episodic nature of daily life, private thoughts and personal frustration. Chris recently received his MFA from Montana State University and has an extensive background in print media. His work has been presented in both Canada and the United States. This event is free and open to the public, so invite a friend. Refreshments will be served.
