Complementary Compounds
Opening Reception Thurs, April 2nd, 6pm-late San Francisco— 111 Minna Gallery is proud to present “Complementary Compounds”, an exhibition showcasing recent works from former San Francisco resident and Gainesville, FL native Ted Lincoln. The gallery will be hosting an ARTIST-ATTENDED opening reception on Thursday, April 2, 2009, 6pm-late. The opening is free and open to members of the public 21 and over. The exhibition will run from April 2- May 2, 2009. Work will be on display during the Yerba Buena Gallery Walk on Saturday, April 25th from 12pm to 6pm. This will be the first solo exhibition for Mr. Lincoln at the 111 Minna Gallery after participating in numerous group exhibitions and a 2 person show with Miya Ando in 2007. A graduate of SFAI, Lincoln drifted away from his oil-based hyper-realism compositions to his abstract ink work based on a reconnection with his southeast Asian roots and an apprenticeship in China. For “Complementary Compounds”, Lincoln will be debuting two bodies of work: the first being new images created in his trademark sumi ink on rice paper and the second applying numerous techniques to a more complex foundation in mother of pearl. “Using sumi ink and rice paper each piece is begun employing a chance driven process based on a traditional style of Chinese landscape painting. This method, the Pomo method, was pioneered by the monk Wong Mo during the T’iang dynasty (618 - 906 AD). To this foundation I add various combinations of painting methods which include, but are not limited to, the use of acrylic paint, epoxy glazes and automotive paint to create a hybrid of Eastern and Western technique. With the addition of other elements such as the bar codes, binary codes and geometric shapes, the modern is persuaded to co-exist with the ancient. The combination of the abstract organic spaces created by the ink, and the more formal hard edged elements, helps me force a visual dialogue between nature and its filtration through technology. In doing so, I convey the ideas of censorship, diversion, and manipulation, which are ideas that I am continuing to explore.” Established in 1993 in downtown San Francisco 111 Minna Gallery is in the business of Art & Leisure.
