Gwen Manfrin and Wynne Hayakawa Wynne Hayakawa, Evidence
Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition featuring new work by Wynne Hayakawa and Gwen Manfrin, with an opening reception held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 5:30 – 7:30 pm; the exhibition runs through November 7. "I paint to raise the issues of earth, light, water, and air, and keep them in our consciousness." - Wynne Hayakawa Bay Area artist Wynne Hayakawa works from landscape, starting with drawing and painting on paper. She arrives at almost complete abstraction in her oil paintings, which refer to the light, colors, and textures of the natural world. She works on plywood panels, using putty knives as often as brushes. Her palette ranges from the blues and grays of fog to the bright hues of midday California summer. “The person we convey to the world is often a “created” image, one that has characteristics that are desirable, but not necessarily honest. It is what we want our footprint of self to say to others.” - Gwen Manfrin Showing concurrently with Hayakawa is artist Gwen Manfrin, whose current body of work is comprised of mixed media paintings and drawings. Thematically, Manfrin explores human emotions, specifically, moments of unguarded angst. She strives to capture a barely concealed instant of despair or pain. The figures in Manfrin’s paintings are costumed either with curlers, a bathing cap, her mother’s honeymoon negligee, her father’s racing silks, or a ballerina’s tutu.
