For 2 x 2 Solos, Samuel Levi Jones creates a large site-specific installation of deconstructed law books. These texts—usually found neatly organized in law firms or law school libraries—archive federal and state laws that are applied and interpreted by the courts. Talk to Me interrogates the limits of our legal system by rendering these books exposed and unbound. At its essence, Talk to Me is an invitation for dialogue about the structure that governs our bodies and lives.
An Artist's Reception will be held on First Friday, Setpember 4, 6-8pm. An Artist's Talk is schedule for Saturday, September 12, 11am. The Talk will feature Samuel Levi Jones in conversation with Leigh Raiford, Associate Professor of African American Studies, UC Berkeley, and curator Patricia Cariño.
About the Artist: Samuel Levi Jones’ paintings address the exertion of power through structures of narrative, history and text. Jones physically dismantles and deconstructs discarded materials, such as encyclopedias and medical reference books, to create abstract and formally austere works—razing their status as a power structure and by extension the hierarchies created by narratives told and untold. Trained as a photographer and multidisciplinary artist, Jones earned a BA from Taylor University and a BFA from the Herron School of Art and Design. He received a MFA in Studio Arts from Mills College, Oakland. In 2014 Jones was the winner of the ninth Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize by the Studio Museum in Harlem where he had a solo exhibition (March 26 - June 28, 2015). He has exhibited his work at Jessica Silverman, San Francisco; Watts Tower Art Center, Los Angeles; Papillion, Los Angeles and the Harrison Center for the Arts, Indianapolis.
About the Curator: Patricia Cariño is a contemporary art and public programs curator based in Oakland, CA. At the Exploratorium, she collaborates with artists and scientists to create temporary exhibitions and lecture series for adult audiences. She also works with a San Francisco art advisor to manage contemporary art collections for several clients throughout the United States. Cariño is the co-founder of PMx (Post Meridiem), a curatorial research platform that explores the intersections of contemporary arts and social media. Her curatorial projects include exhibitions and programs at Burnt Oak Gallery, Heron Arts, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Asian Contemporary Arts Consortium, and Oakland Museum of California. Patricia earned her BA in History of Art from the University of California, Berkeley, and a MA degree in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts.
