On Friday evening, November 6, there will be an opening reception for the 2015 Science in the Studio exhibition that is free and open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. at CCA’s main campus building at 1111 Eighth Street. Titled The Cult of the Nine Muses, the exhibition features interdisciplinary artwork by students enrolled in CCA Sci-Studio courses -- studio courses in which embedded scientists give lectures, lead workshops, or otherwise bring together art and science. The Simpson Library features the MUSE (Mobile Units for Science Exploration), which will be open for exploration during the opening reception. Also in the library is Pedagogy in Practice: Exploring Science in the Art and Design Studio, a group exhibition that includes instructional tools, class assignments, field trips, and individual artworks by faculty and students demonstrating connections between science, art, and design as explored in CCA’s classrooms.
At 8 p.m., CCA professor Kim Anno directs Drought 1200 featuring students from her Science in the Studio course “California Drought” along with professional dancers from the Naka Dance Company. This interdisciplinary performance evokes the startling statistics and disruptive reality when water becomes scarce in California. Sound and music will be provided by Kristina Dutton on violin, Kanoko Nishi Smith on koto, and Crystal Pascucci on cello. Symposium-related poster sessions will take place throughout CCA’s Nave, complemented by installations, including Harmonograph by Seth Augustine and Christina La Sala, and Ours/Theirs: Mountain Gorillas by Lucy Spelman and Natalie Tyler. Additional installations will take place on the campus’s Back Lot in the outdoor shipping containers.
