Chapter 9: Meeting Juan Provecho – Further Adventures of a Chino Latino en Mexico
Opening Receptions: 7 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 Friday, September 4, 2009 In conjunction with Oakland Art Murmur First Fridays This is the next installment of a series of travel photography set in Mexico by Oakland photographer Bob Jew. The series is now in its ninth year and is ongoing. These new works represent travels from years 2008-2009. Artist Statement In this work I am addressing the idea of capturing and expressing a continuum of time in a photograph rather than to be limited to what is captured in the split second the camera shutter opens and closes. I believe my reflexes to be too slow for that type of photography. Anyway, consciously perceived experiences in human real life tend to take place not so much at 1/125th of a second, but over much longer periods. (The unconscious may be a different story, however.) Each photo is a document that incorporates a series of resources and elements drawn from different aspects of that string of events that would make up an “experience”. The final result does not look like the original event, ironically, but serves the experience in a more faithful manner.
