Kala Artists-in-Residence Talks
: Dan Harrison, Noel Hensey and Jennifer Little Please join us for a Kala Artists-in-Residence Talk on Wednesday, August 19th at the new Kala Gallery located at 2990 San Pablo Avenue (around the corner from the Kala studios). Artists Dan Harrison, Noel Hensey and Jennifer Little will give presentations about their work and current projects at Kala. The event begins at 7:00 pm and is free and open to the public. Dan Harrison has been making prints for ten years. His art, under the name hj mooij, is both expressive and conceptual, with undertones of humor and overtones of vibrant color. He practices a rare form of vampire printmaking using the most advanced techniques in android registration. His current projects at Kala include lithographs for a story titled, The Carrot Birds Discover Earth, which is directly linked with his master's thesis work, The Space Traveling Moon Monster, a tale of a moon monster's epic journey through the universe. In addition to the Godander2mal stories he is also working on a conceptual piece with a title too long to publish here. Harrison studied printmaking at UC Santa Cruz and earned a MFA in printmaking at MSU Bozeman in 2007. Noel Hensey’s work is influenced by Buddhist philosophy and practices, existing artwork, music and technology. His work is formulated through; the collection of found imagery/objects, drawing, photography and video. These initial expressions are developed using both imaging hardware and software. “The motive behind this work is to establish and maintain openness to allow the possibility for change and liberation.” Hensey was born in Dublin in 1977. He currently lives and works in Co. Kildare. He graduated from the University of Ulster with a BSc (Hon's) Technology and Design in 2001. Since then he has completed a Development Program for Visual Artists at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology and also a Post Graduate Diploma course at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. This year he will undertake a MA in Fine Art at Chelsea. In Jennifer Little’s most recent body of work, Barriers and Conduits: Viewing the Urban Landscape, heavy, concrete bridges frame glimpses of nature. The framed views depict nature’s containment within the urban landscape, while alluding to the technological and social conditions that create this urban nature. Little combines her large scale still photographs from below the bridges with audio and video footage of traffic above them. This captures the striking contrast between the relative tranquility of the spaces beneath these bridges and the hectic flow of traffic above. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Little received a B.F.A. in Photography from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. Jennifer is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
