New Works on Paper & Sculpture Aurobora Press is pleased to announce the exhibition of a new suite of works on paper and recent sculpture by Chicago-based artist Fraser Taylor. In Fraser Taylor’s recent monotypes titled /Tracking/, the artist continues exploring the line of inquiry that examines separation and transplantation. Over the past few years, Fraser Taylor has used the metaphor of borders—boundaries that are self-imposed and mandated, actual and theoretical—to begin a visual dialog on issues which wedge us apart culturally, racially, geographically and socially. At first take, these new works on paper are deceptively simple compositions. By grafting collage elements, cut-outs, handwork, and over-printing dense color applications, Taylor creates deceptively complex surfaces that beg further attention and highlight an intricacy of broken infrastructure that appears to be breaking apart or re-forming. The artist translates this feeling of displacement in both his 2-D and 3-D works which further underscores the idea that both medium and expression are emblems of flux. Taylor often moves his surfaces from floor to wall and back again. In this exhibit at Aurobora Press, the works on paper literally “track” along a wire extended along the gallery walls, hanging unframed between wall and floor to accentuate the fragility, the malleability, inherent in the artist’s investigation. The sculptural works stand like precarious sentries, silent monitors tracking movement. Both his 3-d forms and 2-D mark-making underscore territorial boundaries as each composition forces the viewer’s eye to redefine exterior and interior space. The compositions in this exhibition—with their intrusions, obfuscations, and protrusions—fracture the sense of order and expectation. Fraser Taylor’s new work continues to resuscitate and push forward the concept of the territory beyond the restrictive boundary and the constant challenge for personal reparation.
