Listening Sequence Composition (Violet-Void), 2009 21 × 72 × 1-1/2 inches
Emerging Bay Area artist Freddy Chandra debuts in a solo exhibition of new work at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, September 10, with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30pm. On view will be Chandra’s luminous, multi-panel, dimensional wall-works made with cast acrylic, resin, graphite and urethane paint. Meditations on structure and sound come through in these arrestingly beautiful, quiet compositions. The exhibition will be on view through October 31. Chandra continues refining his investigations of color and transparency on cast acrylic and resin in new wall installations. Drawing with graphite on plexiglas, Chandra creates seamless value shifts that emerge through subtly tinted resin in colors of blue, green and violet. These thoughtful, impeccably crafted architectural works create a sense of light filtering through a lens, as though capturing a brief moment in time reduced to slow motion. The artist states, “I seek rhythms that are fleetingly present in such elusive moments as when overhearing a fragment of music only as it fades away, essentially catching hold of bits in a stream of information before they disappear.” Chandra, in seeking to describe nearly intangible experiential moments, has also previously created installations in video, light and sound. Freddy Chandra completed a MFA at Mills College, Oakland in 2004 and received a BA in Architecture and Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. He has been an artist-in-residence at Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Woodside, CA; Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA; and Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA. Chandra is currently on the Mills College Visiting Artist Faculty, and lives and works in Oakland, California.
