Resemblances
Reception: Friday, March 7, 6 - 8PM Aftermodern is pleased to present Resemblances, an exhibition of work by photographer Caroline Shepard. Following the artist’s opening reception on Friday, March 7th, from 6 to 8pm, the show extends through April 9th. In this exhibit Shepard references not only the many visual pieces from which each photograph is digitally assembled, but also the mimetic nature of the final image as a representation. Resemblances come to exist between the individual parts and the constructed whole, a relationship of empirical reality and transcendent ideality within suggested interiors, living spaces and their inhabitants. The human subject is photographed in a manner that subverts the voyeuristic tendencies of the genre, one that allows the subjects to participate in the perceptions of the viewer. Utilizing the freedom to infuse her images with imagination, she references historical painters such as Hopper, Vermeer, Rembrandt and Eakins to bring to her work a rich palette of light and technique. The issues of selfhood engaged in her photographic work is contemporary, yet the tableaux in which they are placed describe possible narratives that are both historical and cyclical.
