New Work by Christopher Romer Opening Reception: Saturday, October 24th, 6-9pm First Friday Reception: Friday, November 6th, 7-10pm Christopher Romer’s new exhibit 3AM: Under the Full Moon consists of a series of static masses, which together read as a landscape. The collection of pieces also plays on the total volume question: where the objects are hanging from the ceiling, attached to the walls and sitting on the floor, as if we were floating through an aquarium, or staring into a tidal pool. The main floor piece titled, The Woods are Full of Them, resembles a very large hobby horse or confidence decoy rolled in on wheels. We are met with a Californian redwood burl married to painted, turned masses of New England beechwood. The burl’s once rough and jagged edges—the inheritance from a logger’s cuts years ago—are now smoothed over and filled, added to and subtracted from. No specific hint of narrative here, but somehow we read a landscape in this static mass, or more precisely a pondscape, perhaps with lily buds springing from the tuber root, and it’s surrounding, swirling ecosystem. From one vantage point, this is a pondscape, yet taking a few steps more, we now tell ourselves it could be some nameless corporal form—an arresting, dozing farm animal, suggesting bulk and flesh.
