Visual artist Julie Sutherland is opening up her studio for this year's Open Studios at Art Explosion. Shell be previewing two in-progress series in addition to other bits and pieces done throughout the year. October 9 -11, 2009 Friday: 7:00pm - 11:00pm (Opening Party) Also open Saturday and Sunday: 11am - 6pm About the series: The Union paintings collapse official portraits of US Presidents and First Ladies into larger-than-life personae, each existing outside of a specific time, place, and gender. Combining historical fact and fiction, and playing on drag, these dandy ladies reference elements of culture and politics from art history to punk rock. Tracing is a group of drawings that explore the subject of atrocity. The act of tracing, whiting-out, and reconfiguring these scenes provides a means to explore western culture's attempts and failures to conceptualize (and ultimately stop) gross crimes throughout history. Tracing also examines how these crimes have been translated to the culture at large through photography and the press, asking the question, what is being shown and what is being left out?
