Shelter in Place
Receptions: Friday, November 6 and December 4, 7–10 p.m. in conjunction with Oakland Art Murmur First Fridays (www.oaklandartmurmur.com). Sue Higo: Susan Higo is a Los Angeles based conceptual artist. For this show, Susan's mixed media sculpture, drawings and installation focus on the home, neighborhood, community and our personal and collective sense of security, sentimentality and contentment. Chris Held: I make derivative objects that emphasize a sense of indifference towards our built environment. I choose forms such as furniture, appliances, and architectural details—for their unpretentious ubiquity. By applying a reductive process and a high-level of craft to these items, they become both unspectacular and strangely valuable. My interest in these concepts is rooted in a desire for a more progressive and well-considered constructed society—one that values the utopian ambitions of Modernist design mixed with an enlightened sense of localism and the handmade. Aaron Geman: In a down economy, Aaron Geman is driving a hard line with art consumers. His latest series revolves around an electro-mechanical scrolling display that self-advertises while threatening potential patrons.
