The Legendary Lions Versus the Fists of Fury Mike Lai, The Legendary Lions Versus the Fists of Fury
Southern Exposure begins 2010 with four newly commissioned solo projects by Bay Area based artists Genevieve Quick and Andy Vogt and New York based artist Lacey Jane Roberts, and performance by San Francisco based artist Mike Lai. Continuing the long tradition of presenting solo exhibitions and projects, Southern Exposure presents these four artists’ work as part of its ongoing 35th anniversary year and inaugural season in its new space at 3030 20th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. Mike Lai, The Legendary Lions Versus the Fists of Fury, 2010 Mike Lai’s work explores his fascination with Kung Fu genre films, and in particular Bruce Lee. Interested in how these films have influenced Asian cultural identities through extreme spectacle, Lai’s work incorporates these performative strategies as a way to question cultural implications. For his solo exhibition at Southern Exposure, Lai juxtaposes the traditional with the contemporary in The Legendary Lions versus the Fists of Fury. In a one-night performance, traditional lion dancers and Chinese musicians will face off with Bruce Lee’s life-sized fists accompanied by a local scratch DJ in an epic battle to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
