In Case You’re Lost Glancing at the Twin Peaks, 2009, mixed media on panel
Gallery Reception February 04, 2010, 6:00 to 8:00 pm Grounded in the artist's own upbringing, raised in both America and Japan, of both and of neither culture, In Case You're Lost unravels the story of Matsu’s wandering interests and roots. Veins of "Americanism" and "Japanese-ness" weave into one another, resulting in paintings, sculptures and a carefully constructed installation reflective of new hybrids that are global in scope and awareness. The exhibition’s centerpiece, a large, six foot sculpture Wherever I Am (2009) will occupy the center of the gallery and the Play Mobile figure with whip, riding atop his silver horse in Frederick Remington glory, will serve as a central pivot for other paintings, sculptures and installations that look into the uncomfortable corners of cultural hybridity. The15-foot wide triptych Runnin Further Deeper (2009) is not only a significant technical achievement in painting, a heavily layered tour de force of mixed cultural imagery, textile patterns and spontaneous splashes and drips, but a rich examination of the artist’s own ambivalence about staying put and adopting any one culture as a source of strength or belonging. Smaller round paintings playfully depict a logo-like kirin, a mythical Japanese dragon-horse, a bringer of good fortune.
