2FIK, La Grande Intendante, 2012. Photo print; 50 x 32 inches. Courtesy of the artist.
2Fik is a French-born Québécois artist of Moroccan heritage whose work playfully engages questions of identity and gender to discomfiting ends. 2Fik eases boundaries between propriety and scandal to suggest that identity is fractured and lost in translation. Defining himself as a stateless person, he has a concept of self informed by the multiple, hybrid identities he inhabits in order to survive in French, Moroccan, and Québécois cultures. Presented in partnership with Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. and the program Gender in Translation.
