Graduate Lecture Series: Shana Moulton
160 Kroeber Hall Shana Moulton, courtesy Krowswork Shana Moulton is an artist working in video and performance. Her often humorous work comments on consumerism, objectification and the rituals of femininity. In Sand Saga (on view from January 30 at Krowswork in Oakland) her alter-ego Cynthia undergoes a ritual passage and ceremony while staring into her bathroom mirror after having put on a beauty facial mask. Cynthia's interactions with the everyday world are both mundane and surreal, in a domestic sphere just slightly askew. Moulton's protagonist initiates relationships with objects and consumer products that are at once banal and uncanny. Shana Moulton's video work has been screened and exhibited internationally, including at The Armory Show Art Fair, New York; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; Loop '05 Video Festival, Barcelona; Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin, Paris; Aurora, Edinburgh; Dark Light Festival, Dublin; Impakt Festival, Utrecht; Internationale Kurzfilmtage, Oberhausen; Canada Gallery, New York; and Bellwether, New York. Moulton recieved her BFA at the University of California, Berkeley and her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University, and has attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine, and De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Her work will be on view at Krowswork Gallery in Oakland from January 30-March 7. Moulton currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
