Individualism and social connection are difficult to reconcile. Society provides protection, but also restriction; companionship, but also conflict. 2008 AIR Phillip Robertson is a journalist who has spent the past six years covering war-torn locales around the world, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia and Burma. He brings first-hand experience of the effects of global conflict on regular people, struggling to survive while racked by forces well beyond their control. Closer to home, 2008 AIR Jessica Frelinghuysen sculpts objects to help negotiate social anxieties. Her creative designs with a strong sense of humor cut through our fears about vulnerability and exposure.
