Filmmaker Astra Taylor brings philosophy to the streets with her eloquent film, Examined Life. The documentary features well-known philosophers in motion, discussing their theories' intersection with the everyday against the backdrop of spaces significant to their theories. From the back of a New York City taxicab, Cornell West riffs on philosophy's similarities to the improvisation of jazz and the blues. Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek visits a garbage dump to challenge widespread attitudes toward the environment and our material life. Against the backdrop of Fifth Avenue's luxury and excess, Peter Singer questions the ethics of consumption. Gender theorist Judith Butler and artist and activist, Sunaura Taylor, who is also the filmmaker's sister, walk through San Francisco's Mission District discussing the individual and our interdependence within communities and society at large. A fascinating, and visually engaging take on life's big questions, Examined Life offers a gateway to a deeper understanding of our interaction with the world.
