Reality Check Feuerman, "Malibu"
Sculpturesite Gallery is pleased to present Reality Check, an exhibition of hyper-realist, painted resin sculptures from the acclaimed artist, Carole A. Feuerman. The show runs from April 15th – June 5th with an opening reception on April 15th from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Though the superrealist technique is breathtaking, Feuerman invites us to look beyond the seeming reality of the sculptures. Through these simulacrums she invites us to ask questions of the nature of reality and deception and the emotions aroused by both. “It is not the fleeting moment that I want to capture,” says Feuerman, “but the universal feeling caught in that fleeting moment. I want the viewer to complete the story when he looks at my sculpture." In works such as “Summer” and “Brooke with a Beach Ball” the female bathers are more than hyper-realized bodies. The bathers are caught in moments of relaxation and meditation; we the viewers are equally caught in our own voyeuristic impulse. However, that voyeurism has its purpose. Feuerman shows even in ordinary activities such as swimming we can find moments of contemplation. Water – Feuerman’s symbol for the universal connection of life – drips from the bathers’ skin creating a connection between the physicality of their bodies and the inherent spirituality within those bodies. The frozen moment of the bathers’ meditation becomes our dynamic exercise of revelation. Feuerman intends for us to look with voyeuristic eyes, contemplate and supply the context and meaning. Carole Feuerman is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most prominent hyper-realist sculptors. She has enjoyed three museum retrospectives to date, and has been included in prestigious exhibitions at, among other venues, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy. Among the notable honors Feuerman has received are the Amelia Peabody Sculpture Award, the Betty Parsons Award in sculpture, the Lorenzo de Medici Prize at the 2001 Biennale di Firenze, and First Prize at the 2008 Beijing Biennale. Her work is in the collections of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, the Absolut Art Collection, and Forbes Magazine, among others. Public collections include The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, The Bass Museum in Miami Beach, The Tampa Museum, The Boca Raton Museum, The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, The Miami Children's Museum, Queensborough Community College Art Museum, Brandeis University, and Grounds for Sculpture. For more information on her many accomplishments and awards, copies of the second edition of Carole A. Feuerman: Sculpture, written by Eleanor Munro and David Finn and published by Hudson Hills Press will be available for purchasing at the exhibition. Though trained in more traditional media, Feuerman eventually came to work with resin casting. She has since added wax, plaster, marble and bronze and is currently experimenting with theatrical elements to create a total environmental experience. Feuerman currently lives and maintains her studio in New York.
