Space Dance Casida, "Red Wings"
Sculpturesite Gallery is pleased to present Space Dance, an exhibition of painted aluminum sculpture by Bay Area artist, Kati Casida. The show runs from March 18 – June 5 with an opening reception on April 15 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. "My sculptures imply motion,” explains Kati Casida, “a continuous passage through space - thrust, undulation, rhythm, inside, outside, and around.” Borrowing from her training in modern dance, Casida transposed the cadence of the body into a unique contemporary sculptural tempo. “Rhythms of Greek and Cypriot dances,” Casida continues, “and my study of modern dance patterns help me to realize how I want to cut through space with my materials and colors.” In addition to dance, Casida studied painting, etching, lithography, textile printing, and woodcut. After two decades of artistic production she finally found her way to sculpture. She began making small models that could be fabricated into large sculptures for public sites. “Immediately I experienced a new sense of freedom and movement,” she explains, “All those lessons learned in dance, printmaking and painting came into play with each sculpture.” Since that time she has spent the last thirty years in constant sculptural production. She begins with paper or thin strips of metal. She cuts and folds them into small models to explore, on an intimate scale, how the form relates to the space around it. Once she is perfectly satisfied with the scale, shape, color, and their relationship to the negative space around the sculpture she begins fabrication. Her works are of varying sizes of sculpture from small maquettes to monumental public installations. The sculptures on exhibition are primarily from her small to medium sized collections. Each are composed of a single, bright hue of strong intensity. In “Orange Peel” the brightly colored, warm orange aluminum strips undulate, twist, and “dance” its way into artistic knots. Then, just as quickly, those knots seem to unravel and resolve themselves in a seamless sculpted choreography of movement. Some, such as “Flame,” use wide strips of metal to convey its meaning of power and thrust, while others, such as “Ode I,” use smaller, more intimate strips thereby highlighting subtlety and discretion. In either case, every work carries the signature mark of rhythm, movement, energy, balance and harmony. Kati Cadida was born in Kati Viroqua, Wisconsin. She received her BS in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She eventually found her way to the Bay Area where she began her sculpture career in earnest. She has shown extensively throughout the Bay Area and western United States and is included in many public and private collections including the Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley, the Santa Clara Civic Center, and the Oakland City Center. In 1993, she founded Nordic 5 Arts, an organization for artists of Nordic heritage in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kati Casida currently lives and maintains a studio in the Bay Area.
