PlasticWorks FAT OPIE
A solo show of work by local artist Scott Mickelson will take place at a.Muse Gallery from April 7th – June 6, 2010. There will be a public reception with the artist on Saturday, April 24, from 7 – 11 p.m. A musical performance with the Mickelson’s band, Fat Opie, will begin at 9:30 pm. Admission is free. The exhibition will feature the artist’s PlasticWorks series, which addresses how technology and the information age drive us, as a society, to distraction. Mickelson is specifically interested in how our lack of attention can lead to the neglect of children. Also included in the show are select paintings from the Miner Series, which includes paintings leading up to the PlasticWorks. This will be the first opportunity to view the breadth of work Mickelson and the first time the PlasticWorks series is shown in its entirety. Inspired by true stories, the PlasticWorks are part of an ongoing series in which Mickelson depicts how the lack of awareness of adults leads to the victimization of children. In one bold and striking work entitled, Terrarium, the viewer is asked to consider if it is wise to keep large snakes in the same household as small children.” According to the artist, apparently some people do. Gleaning from distressing articles from the local paper, he constructs shocking scenes to prompt the questions, “why wasn’t anyone watching?” and “when do we, as a society, share the responsibility for the ignorance of others?”
